The old garden

The garden in autumn

Between December 2006 and November 2010, I lived in the middle of the Cambridgeshire countryside. The house had a large but unassuming-looking garden which turned out to be pretty awesome for wildlife.

In those four years, I recorded:
  • 100 species of bird (seen in or over, or heard from the garden)
  • about 160 species of (mostly macro) moth (largely in summer 2010)
  • 18 species of butterfly
  • 15 species of dragonfly and damselfly
  • 11 species of mammal
  • 3 species of amphibian
Pondorama

Those are just the bare stats, I suppose. Some of my favourite things were:
  • digging a wildlife pond and having Great Crested Newts turn up within months!
  • watching young Barn Owls perching on the fence, just a few metres from me
  • Hummingbird Hawk-moths on the buddleia
  • visits from an assortment of Sparrowhawks
  • watching a silhouetted skein of Pink-footed Geese fly past a full moon (thanks for the tip-off, Mark)
  • a catch of 540+ moths of 61+ species on the morning of 20 July 2010 (and processing them before work)
  • marvelling at dragonflies dogfighting over the pond
  • Green Woodpeckers digging for ants in the lawn
  • recording Redstart, Black Redstart and Whinchat IN the garden
I could go on, blah blah blah... Anyway, you get the picture.

Here are the lists, if you like that kind of thing.
